Lawrence Casserley and Melvyn Poore

Music for Tuba and Computer

Last changed 11 January, 1999

Poore and Casserley have collaborated on several projects in recent years. They share an interest in the creation of new performance instruments. Both are composers, performers and improvisers, and both have considerable experience in real time computer applications. They worked together extensively on the preparation of Poore's new commission from Radio Bremen for Pro Musica Nova. "Nesting Time (Nach-Schlag)" is the third in the 'Schlag' series of works (Casserley was also involved with "Vor-Schlag"). Like several of both their works, "Nesting Time" combines fixed formal elements and improvised elements. The first four minutes of fully-notated tuba music define the temporal and textural structure for the rest of the piece, while the performers respond to the computer with freer music. "Nesting Time" was premiered at Pro Musica Nova on 2 May, 1998 and received further performances on 3, 6 and 8 May in Köln, Hannover and Wien.

Melvyn Poore is a distinguished tubist working in a remarkable array of different musical situations: as soloist with and without orchestra and chamber ensembles - including Cambrian Brass, London Jazz Composers' Orchestra, Grubenklang Orchester, Übü Örchestrü, Ohrkiste, European Tuba Quartet, English Tuba Consort and English Gamelan Orchestra. He has travelled widely throughout Europe, North America and Australia, performing, broadcasting, teaching, leading workshops in schools, on beaches and street corners, in canteens, colleges and clubs, castles and even concert halls.

Poore and Casserley perform their own and others' work including:

Poore - "Vor-Schlag" and "And Finally"

Casserley - "PanHarmonic" and "UbAtAbU"

Stockhausen - "Solo" - realisation by Poore

Nono - "Post-Prae-Ludium per Donau"

They are planning to commission new works for tuba and computer processing

They also perform as an improvising duo, and in quartet with Nicolas Collins and Peter Cusack.
